As one of the planet’s most medicinal and versatile herbs Lavender has been used for centuries as a natural healer. Lavender is also a natural antiseptic and disinfectant and its uses are extremely resourceful and multifaceted. It has been dubbed an aphrodisiac as well as an awareness builder. It is extremely sensory and seductive if necessary. One of the greatest attributes Lavender holds is its instinctual benefit to soothe and relieve tension, stress, pain and pressure. It also produces one of the few essential oils that are gentle enough to apply directly to the skin. Here at AKL we have created an earth and animal friendly product line that takes full advantage of Lavenders most endowed qualities.

Uses for LAVENDER Essential Oil & Tea
Perhaps no other essential oil has been used as widely for many thousands of years as Lavender. Lavendula officinalis is a native of the Mediterranean. There are over 200 different varieties of lavender. Each variety has it’s own unique and distinctive lavender scent ranging from heavily camphoric too mildly sweet. The aromatic scent of Lavender has a regulating effect on the nervous system and is known for its soothing, calming and stress relieving qualities. Its harmonizing and therapeutic nature provides mental clarity as well as emotional balance.

The Essential Oil of lavender is antibacterial, antifungal and extremely concentrated. It can be applied topically to cuts, scrapes, insect bites, burns and helps to prevent scar tissue. The oil is used to combat acne, eczema and sunspots. Lavender is also an effective insect repellent, cleaning agent and purifies the air. Placing a drop under the nose and on the chest can help ease congestion from a cold. The oil can be applied to the bottom of the feet providing relief from insomnia as well as on the temples for headaches. A few drops are a delightful addition to the bathwater for blissful relaxation.

Local Pain Relief and Relaxation – Lavender oil can be applied to the skin in almost any situation involving pain. Massage the oil on to rheumatic joints, the cheek overlying an aching tooth, or the forehead and temples for migraine pain. A few drops of oil on a cotton ball plugged into the ear relieve a mild earache. Lavender tincture or tea can provide systemic support, helping relax tensed and aching muscles. For menstrual cramps and pain, drink tea and massage oil into the lower abdomen for pain relief. A few drops massaged into the temples or the back of the neck or shoulders can ease tension caused by stress. Aches and pains, elsewhere in the body, will also benefit. Apply the oil to minor burns, sunburns, sores, and itching skin, as well as insect stings or bites. Smelling lavender can also calm a person who is anxious, claustrophobic, can’t sleep and feels emotionally low.

Digestive Problems – Most often combined with other digestive remedies, lavender has specific value where emotional distress is the underlying cause of the digestive disturbance such as “butterflies” in the stomach, or bloating, belching and irritable bowel syndrome. Lavender tea can help.

Congestion and Other uses – In France, lavender is used in the treatment of a wide range of respiratory problems, including the flu, cough, whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis. Its anti spasmodic and antiseptic activity combines well with other herbs such as thyme, spearmint, chamomile, lemon balm and rosemary. Place a dab of lavender oil under nose, on the throat and chest. The oil will both penetrate the skin and offer up a aromatic scent that helps relieve the symptoms. Lavender tea has a long-standing reputation to be used as a tonic for nervous, hyper or sickly children.

Reduce Stress

Stress has been sighted as a major cause of disease and illness. For centuries, Lavender has been used for reducing anxiety, calming nerves and soothing the spirit.

Slipping a Lavender Pillow Insert inside your pillowcase will help provide a more restful sleep. Being able to breathe in instant calm and relaxation from this fantastic herb is truly one of nature’s wonderful gifts. Lavender's calming, relaxing, stress relieving, and healing properties have become very popular around the world today for good reason, with the hectic lives many of us have come to lead.

Why is lavender aromatherapy so popular today? It is considered by many to be a natural, alternative remedy for a variety of common ailments ranging from anxiety, headaches, to insomnia. It is believed that lavender can ease stress, induce relaxation, refresh, and even invigorate. For the skin, lavender oil is often used to treat fungal infections, soothe wounds and sunburn, even insect bites. The scent of Lavender connects to your senses, and has a powerful influence on our bodies and minds. The scent is believed to activate nerve cells in the nasal cavity, which then send impulses to the limbic system, the area of the brain associated with emotions and memory.
Emotionally, Lavender can make you feel better by evoking a pleasant memory (the smell of lavender might remind you of fresh linen on the clothesline or a fragrance worn by your favorite Aunt, for example). Physically, the scent of Lavender may help to relieve certain conditions by stimulating the immune, circulatory, or nervous systems.
Lavender is a highly aromatic fragrance, which refreshes and tones the skin, and soothes the nerves. Lavender can be quite effective in the clearing of depression, especially when related to stress.

People who take daily baths or showers with lavender may experience an improved mood, reduced aggression, and a more positive outlook. Herbalists who promote relaxation have traditionally used lavender.

A study of 40 women showed that bathing or showering with a Lavender Bath Gel or Lavender Bubble Bath produced significant improvements in their mood, while decreasing tense feelings, suggesting bathing alone had mood-enhancing effects. However, those taking baths with lavender had a significant reduction in aggressive feelings, compared with those whose baths did not contain lavender. The second part of the study showed that negative thoughts about future events were significantly lower after taking baths with lavender, suggesting it may help reduce pessimism in some individuals. Preliminary studies suggest inhaling the fragrance of Lavender Essential Oil may also be useful in treating insomnia and other conditions of the nervous system, while drinking Lavender Herb Tea may be effective in treating indigestion and heartburn.

Lavender Essential Oil has been used as a stimulating liniment to help ease the aches and pains of rheumatism. The Lavender Body Spritzer can soothe and protect sunburned skin and possibly prevent infection in blisters that often accompany more severe sunburns. Finishing your bath or shower with the Lavender Body Butter Cream leaves your skin feeling silky soft and smelling of sensual Lavender.

You can find many simple and inexpensive ways to reduce your stress level on your own. Take nice deep breaths. Have someone give you a foot massage using Lavender Bath & Body Oil your feet will look and feel great! Another way to start is to cut out artificial stress reducers such as alcohol which can mask symptoms and often make symptoms worse, instead put on your favorite music and have a cup of Lavender Herb Tea which is deliciously soothing and comforting to the spirit. Eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and try our Lavender Gourmet Seasoning on Chicken Skewers placed atop a bed of fresh pasta. Foods, which are high in complex carbohydrates, moderate amounts of protein, and low in fat, reduce stress. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine, which has been shown to increase anxiety.

To help you focus on being still, calm and free of stress, light a Lavender Candle and drink some Lavender Herb Tea. These are simple things that bring tranquility and dissipate tension. The process in which you use Lavender has a lot to do with its ability to work it’s magic. Whether you’re boiling water for tea, drawing a bath or massaging your feet with Lavender Bath & Body Oil or Lavender Gardener Lotion, there is something so soothing and peaceful in the ritual of preparing to relax. Once enveloped in the Lavender moment, people often describe the feeling as pure bliss. Women in particular, need to take advantage of the refuge from daily life that an herbal bath using Lavender Bath Salts will offer in the form of solace from a hectic world. Maybe you should start a “relaxing ritual” of your own?

If you are feeling particularly stressed and out of balance and never seem to have time for yourself, see if you can schedule just one thing each week - even if it's 30 minutes to exercise or read a book or soak in a Lavender Bubble Bath. Make a list of all the things you do now and identify what areas are most important to you - then see how much time you're spending on those areas. Light a Lavender Candle with your favorite music, and apply some Lavender Essential oil to your temples to ease your mind.

Lavender offers a multitude of benefits and uses. It balances the mood, clears the mind, has a long tradition in skin & hair care as well as medicine and is used for many household solutions. One of the unique characteristics of Lavender Essential Oil is that it is not merely energizing or relaxing, but balancing.

The scent of Lavender will rejuvenate and inspire a tired person, and relax, soothe and slow down someone who is stressed or tense. Harness the powers of Lavender to add balance and serenity to our increasingly hectic lives. While pharmaceutical drugs are limited to either stimulating or sedating a person, Lavender - like many other remedies offered by nature - is able to re-establish the person's balanced, harmonious and natural state without the use of synthetic chemicals.

Bringing the fragrance of Lavender into your everyday living could reduce your stress level. A drop or two of Lavender Essential Oil on your pillow at night could help curb insomnia, and help you get the rest your body craves.

Stress is the way our bodies and minds react to something which upsets our normal balance in life; an example of stress is the response we feel when we are frightened or threatened. Placing a dab of Lavender Essential Oil on each temple and above the nose or chest will help keep you from reacting to stressful situations.

During stressful events our adrenal glands release adrenaline, a hormone, which activates our body's defense mechanisms causing our hearts to pound, blood pressure to rise, muscles to tense, and the pupils of our eyes to dilate. Surrendering to the day in a warm, soothing tub filled with fragrant, moisturizing Lavender Bubble Bath, will surely blow your blues away.

Lavender is very effective with helping you relax, which can lessen your risk for heart disease, the number one killer of American women, and certain types of cancer. Constant aches and pains, palpitations, anxiety, chronic fatigue, crying, over or under - eating, frequent infections, and a decrease in your sexual desire are signs you may notice which indicate you may be under stress. Anything which overwhelms us can cause us to experience stress, the illness or death of a family member, the loss of a job, and difficulties in relationships are examples of situations stressful enough to cause physical or psychological symptoms.

You may not think washing your hair with Lavender Shampoo or shaving your skin with Lavender Shaving Gel will help you de-stress, but it just might. There is a growing body of evidence showing that the fragrance of Lavender as present in products that you use to bathe with like our Lavender Foaming Bath Gel, wash your hair, or even shave with, can benefit your health.

Aromatherapy is effective because it works directly on the brain’s emotional center. Medical studies find aromatherapy to help speed recovery time and reduce anxiety in heart and cancer patients due to its calming and relaxing effects. Something as simple as washing your hands with Lavender Citrus Hand Soap can be amazingly pleasurable. Lavender Aromatherapy candles is another way to bring lavender into your living space.

A Lavender scented candle is also very soothing and calming as the fragrance create harmony in the spirit. Lavender is considered by many to be a natural, alternative remedy for a variety of common ailments ranging from anxiety, headaches, tension, stress and insomnia. Using the Lavender Gardener Salve or the Lavender Gardener Lotion will help heal dry skin from summer sun to winter cold, while providing the calming scent of Lavender. The Lavender Gardener Lotion is also a great way to repel flies and mosquitoes while outdoors. Rejuvenate yourself, and smell the Lavender ---your spirit will be happier for it!

Chocolate Health

Did you know that chocolate could result in health benefits, more specifically heart-health benefits? You no longer need to feel guilty when you want a piece of chocolate. Flavonoids are natural compounds found in cocoa plants, which provide “antioxidant” benefits. Antioxidants are believed to help the body’s cells resist damage caused by free radicals, formed by normal bodily processes such as breathing or environmental contaminants like cigarette smoke.

Not all chocolate is equal. As is the case with our Lavender Truffles made of rich, creamy dark chocolate to soothe your chocolate cravings with the perfect hint of calming lavender.

One of the latest studies found that eating chocolate lowered blood pressure in people with hypertension. A truffle a day could keep the doctor away. Dark chocolate appears to retain the highest level of flavonoids. Flavonol-rich cocoa and chocolate act similarly to low-dose aspirin in promoting healthy blood flow. Reducing the blood's ability to clot also reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Aside from all the technical jargon on Chocolate, it’s largely the food of romance and combined with lavender, it’s an aphrodisiac. Italian researchers have found that women who eat chocolate regularly have higher levels of sexual desire than women who don't indulge. Given the link between sex and chocolate, we would ask you to please eat your chocolate responsibly.

A Lavender Steam facial is more than good for your skin, its great for your spirit too! It can transform you, relax you, and help you become more balanced and feel the joys of life.
Why not shut out the world for a moment and breathe deeply with a relaxing and hydrating Lavender herbal steam facial?
Steam opens the pores while deeply cleansing and rejuvenating all the skin’s layers. Using lavender essential oil in your facial steam is a wonderful way to nourish your skin. All you need to make your own natural facial steamer is a pot of water, a method of heating the water and a towel. A few drops of Lavender Essential Oil in the water will provide emollient, softening, lubricating, and moisturizing benefits in the steam that will reach deep into your pores.
The Lavender scent is aroma-therapeutic, relaxing and anti-stress. Another benefit of lavender is that it is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Here are the simple steps to make your own facial steam:
1. Place a handful of dried lavender (or a few drops of Lavender Essential oil) in a pot of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes, adding water as needed.
2. Secure your hair back from your face.
3. Wash your face as usual.
4. Place the pot with the steaming water on a trivet or potholder on a table or countertop. Make a tent over your head with a towel, and hang your head over the steaming pot. Make sure not to lean close enough to the steam to scald yourself.
5. Keep your face in the steam tent for about 5 minutes.
6. Rinse your face with cool water.
7. Follow with an astringent (for example, witch hazel) to close the pores.
If you are traveling, instead of steaming your face with herb-infused water, you can use the hot-towel method. Saturate a towel with steaming hot water. Let cool enough to touch the skin, add 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil on to the towel then wrap your clean face with it, and leave it on for two minutes or so. Breathe slowly and deeply – you’ll be transported to Heaven! Enjoy!

Hair tip

In one study of 86 people that suffered from significant hair loss it was discovered that those who massaged their scalps with lavender essential oils daily for 7 months experienced significant hair re-growth compared to those who did not. Try our Lavender/Rosemary Salve on your hair, place a small amount in the palm of one hand, use the fingers from the other hand to scoop the salve from your hand and work it into your scalp, let it soothe your scalp for a minute or two then wash and rinse. Our Lavender Shampoo and Lavender Conditioner also contain lavender essential oils. Another healthful use of Lavender includes using Lavender Herb Tea as a hair rinse to help reduce hair loss and dandruff. Make the tea using our tea bags, let the tea cool and take it with you when you shower. Wash your hair as normal then rinse your hair with the tea, let it soak on your scalp for a minute then do a final rinse with water.
